User Guidance in the Modernisation Process

The challenge: To design an easily accessible digital tool for the home renovation process.

In an era of climate crisis and rising energy costs, more and more people are considering renovating their homes. But the process is time-consuming and often involves a great deal of scattered information, making it difficult to maintain transparency and clarity. Bausparkasse Schwäbisch Hall wanted to take the renovation process to a new level – by giving users a tool to structure information clearly and simplify the individual advisory process.

The goal: a tool that makes the renovation process easier and ensures user guidance throughout – converting prospects into customers and retaining existing ones.

Approach

Renovation. Financing. Realisation.

In a two-stage process, we accompanied BSH as an interdisciplinary team of developers, designers and UX architects on the path to their digital advisory tool. Through an iterative Discover & Define process, multiple prototypes of the application were created, tested, evaluated and refined with a community drawn from the target persona.

The result: an application that gives users the freedom to navigate the renovation process independently and shape it in an entirely new way. The approach begins with the intelligent structuring of existing information to ensure a clear, understandable process. The advisory tool provides valuable guidance – supporting users step by step from initial inspiration through to preparing for their consultation. Playful micro-animations make the experience intuitive and bring the process to life.

Solution

Renovation in Four Steps

Within our agile, cross-functional team, the digital tool was developed in just five sprints of two weeks each. From the conceptual, user-friendly renovation phases and intuitive design elements through to technical implementation and overall strategic positioning on the website, the product today delivers four phases – Explore, Plan, Finance and Get Advice – across a total of 10 renovation categories. In its Minimum Viable Product (MVP), it offers three core functions: bookmarking, project creation and note-taking. It also includes more than 200 relevant guide articles and walks users step by step through the sign-up process and project creation.

There for Users from Start to Finish

The tool empowers users throughout their individual renovation process and offers comprehensive guidance across all phases – a truly customised experience. This guarantees returning users, builds trust in the brand and its expertise, and ultimately generates consultation appointments.

The advisory tool is a significant addition to BSH's overall digital strategy, reinforcing the company's position as the ideal partner in construction and renovation.
