World Usability Day 2024: Designing for a Better World

Centred around the theme ‘Designing for a Better World’, World Usability Day Stuttgart took place at HDM Stuttgart Media University — the perfect meeting point for exchange, inspiration and plenty of great ideas. As a sponsor, 21TORR wasn’t just present — we were right at the heart of it.

Making Sustainable Experiences Default

From accessible design to sustainable software to digital, low-impact concepts — the talks and conversations made clear just how much potential our industry has to actively drive sustainable change.

A definite highlight for us: the talk by Noah Knauss (Senior SUX Architect) and Isabell Höffner (CDO), who showed with ‘Making Sustainable Experiences Default – How SUX leads to sustainably better user experiences’ just how positive an impact sustainable user experiences can have on users and businesses alike.

Beyond the talks, the day was shaped by great conversations at our stand, exciting new perspectives and the motivation to help shape the digital future.

Key Sustainability Learnings

Design leaves a footprint

The internet is responsible for 3.7% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with 80% of these emissions arising during the design phase.

Sustainability at the intersection of design & business

It’s about raising awareness among all stakeholders and enabling conscious decision-making — through methodologies such as the Sustainable Business Model Canvas, non-human personas or sustainability KPIs.

Small steps make the difference

It’s about recognising negative impacts, setting clear goals and implementing sustainable solutions step by step. The world can’t be changed in a day — but together we can take the first step towards a sustainable digital business.
