UXnite @21TORR: Inclusive Design – Creating Access, Harnessing Diversity

In October, alongside hosting UXnite Stuttgart, we also gave a talk on Inclusive Design – exploring how inclusive design lowers barriers for the greatest possible number of potential customers and reduces friction. A topic that is becoming increasingly relevant not just within the UX community, but for businesses across the board.

What is Inclusive Design?

Born out of digital environments, Inclusive Design is a methodology that enables and draws on the full range of human diversity.

Regardless of whether you are involved in product development as a marketing manager, designer, engineer or in any other role – Inclusive Design aims to break down barriers and make access possible for as many people as possible. And: beyond the opportunities, there are also clear legal requirements, for example through WCAG 2.2 or BITV 2.0.

The motto: plain language, no accessibility buzzword bingo!

  1. Discover the inclusive potential

  2. Explore real-world examples from the product development cycle

  3. Understand accessibility standards and legal requirements

Our learnings on digital inclusion and accessibility

Include users' perspectives

Inclusive Design means involving people with different perspectives and learning from them.

Two key starting questions

Who are we designing for? And who are we excluding from the process?

Leverage action areas in the design and development process

Inclusive UX research, persona spectra, context-aware UX/UI design, inclusive design systems, headless UI components, inclusive test criteria and much more

Why digital inclusion matters

Inclusive Design creates value on three levels:

  • Business: reach more customers, expand markets

  • Design: develop better, user-centred solutions

  • Tech: build robust, future-proof systems

Beyond that, it was a pleasure to meet so many UX enthusiasts, clients and developers, and to discuss together how Inclusive Design can be strengthened and advanced from these different perspectives.

Conclusion

Inclusive Design is not an ‘option’ – it’s an attitude: creating access, harnessing diversity and removing barriers. Those who integrate accessibility from the outset into the product development process don’t just build better products – they reach more people and meet legal requirements at the same time.
